Calcium-dependent membrane-binding proteins may regulate molecular events at the interface of the cell membrane and cytoplasm. This gene is one of several genes that encode a calcium-dependent protein containing two N-terminal type II C2 domains and an integrin A domain-like sequence in the C-terminus. CPNE8: a member of the copine protein family with calcium-dependent phospholipid binding properties. Copines are ubiquitously expressed, phospholipid-binding proteins that have been conserved through evolution. Highest expression of CPNE8 mRNA is seen in the prostate, heart, and brain. Fusion to AML1 in a t(12;21) translocation causes aggressive acute myelogenous leukemia. Two alternatively spliced isoforms have been described.
