The protein encoded by this gene is an alpha subunit of guanine nucleotide binding proteins (G proteins). The encoded protein contains the guanine nucleotide binding site and is involved in the hormonal regulation of adenylate cyclase. Belongs to the G-alpha family. G(i/o/t/z) subfamily. 4 isoforms of the human protein are produced by alternative splicing.
