Preparation and Storage

RPGR (retinitis pigmentosa GTPase regulator) is a ciliary protein associated with several forms of inherited retinal degenerative diseases. PDE6D is a ubiquitously expressed prenyl-binding protein and involved in ciliary targeting of prenylated proteins. RPGR is located in the photoreceptor connecting cilia. It interacts with a wide variety of ciliary proteins. RPGR protein has different interacting partners to function in ciliary protein trafficking. RPGR acts as a scaffold protein to recruit cargo-loaded PDE6D to primary cilia. Mutations in the X-linked retinitis pigmentosa GTPase regulator (RPGR) gene are a major cause of retinitis pigmentosa, a blinding retinal disease resulting from photoreceptor degeneration. About 10-15% of retinitis pigmentosa (RP) cases are caused by mutations in the RPGR gene, with RPGR mutations accounting for 70% of X-linked RP cases.
