Biological Activity
Dose for significant outgrowth of neurite using PC-12 rat pheochromocytoma cells: 10ng/ml. 7S NGF has a variety of effects on sensory and sympathetic neuron growth and development. 7S NGF is also needed for sympathetic nerve cells development and maintenance.
Preparation and Storage
May be stored at 4 degree C for short-term only. For long-term storage, aliquot and store at -20 degree C. Aliquots are stable for 6 months at -20 degree C. For maximum recovery of product, centrifuge the original vial after thawing and prior to removing the cap. Further dilutions can be made in assay buffer.

Cofactor: Binds 2 zinc ions per 7S complex. The zinc ions are bound at the alpha-gamma interfaces.
Subunit structure: 7S nerve growth factor is composed of two alpha chains, a beta dimer composed of identical chains, and two gamma chains.
Post-translational modification: The presence of Gln-24 prevents cleavage of the activation peptide, which remains attached at the amino end of the mature alpha chain.
Sequence similarities: Belongs to the peptidase S1 family. Kallikrein subfamily.Contains 1 peptidase S1 domain.
Caution: Has no demonstrable enzymatic activity. This may be due to several critical changes in its sequence, relative to those of related proteases.
