Biological Significance
Activin A is a TGF beta family member that exhibits a wide range of biological activities including regulation of cellular proliferation and differentiation, and promotion of neuronal survival. Elevated levels of Activin A in human colorectal tumors and in post-menopausal woman have been implicated in colorectal and breast cancers, respectively. The biological activities of Activin A can be neutralized by inhibins and by the diffusible TGF beta antagonist, Follistatin.
Bioactivity
biological activity was determined by its ability to inhibit the proliferation of mouse MPC-11 cells. The expected ED50 is ≤2.0 ng/ml, corresponding to a specific activity of ≥5 x 105 units/mg.

Preparation and Storage
Upon receipt store at 4°C short term. Store at -20°C for long term storage. Reconstituted protein is stable at 4°C for up to 1 week. Further dilute in a buffer containing a carrier protein an dstore in working aliquots at -20° to -80°C for up to 12 months. Avoid repeated freeze/thaw cycles.
