Biological Significance: PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) occurs at low levels in blood in normal individuals at a concentration of less than one millionth of levels found in seminal fluid. Unlike in seminal fluid, blood PSA has no function. Typically 55-95% of PSA occurs in blood in vivo complexed to ACT (Antichymotrypsin Complex Protein) in a molar ratio of 1:1. The rest is referred to as Free PSA.
Implications in Disease: PSA is the most useful prostate cancer marker. The proportion of the PSA-ACT complex is higher in patients with prostate cancer than in controls without cancer.
