Sulfamethazine (SMZ) is widely used in livestock feeding and aquaculture as an antibiotic agent and growth promoter. Widespread occurrence of SMZ in surface water, groundwater, soil and sediment has been reported. Experimental results demonstrated that SMZ degradation followed pseudo-first-order reaction kinetics. And heat-activated persulfate oxidation could be an efficient approach for remediation of water contaminated by SMZ and related sulfonamides. Veterinary antimicrobials in land-applied manure can move to surface waters via rain or snowmelt runoff, thus increasing their dispersion in agro-environments. Amarakoon ID et al quantified losses of excreted chlortetracycline, sulfamethazine, and tylosin in simulated rain runoff from surface-applied and soil-incorporated beef cattle (L.) feedlot manure (60 Mg ha, wet wt.). Although their results confirm that cattle-excreted veterinary antimicrobials can be removed via surface runoff after field application, the magnitudes of chlortetracycline and sulfamethazine losses were reduced by soil incorporation of manure immediately after application.
