This gene encodes a member of the transforming growth factor beta superfamily of regulatory proteins that plays an important role in the process of bone and cartilage development. The encoded preproprotein undergoes proteolytic processing to generate a disulfide linked homodimeric glycoprotein. Mice lacking the encoded protein exhibit a short ear phenotype, which is characterized by reduced size of external ear, altered size and shape of the sternum, and other skeletal and soft-tissue abnormalities.
