NCBI Description

This gene encodes a melanocyte-specific type I transmembrane glycoprotein. The encoded protein is enriched in melanosomes, which are the melanin-producing organelles in melanocytes, and plays an essential role in the structural organization of premelanosomes. This protein is involved in generating internal matrix fibers that define the transition from Stage I to Stage II melanosomes. This protein undergoes a complex pattern of prosttranslational processing and modification that is essential to the proper functioning of the protein. A secreted form of this protein that is released by proteolytic ectodomain shedding may be used as a melanoma-specific serum marker. Alternate splicing results in multiple transcript variants. [provided by RefSeq, Jan 2011]

Uniprot Description

SILV: Plays a central role in the biogenesis of melanosomes. Involved in the maturation of melanosomes from stage I to II. The transition from stage I melanosomes to stage II melanosomes involves an elongation of the vesicle, and the appearance within of distinct fibrillar structures. Release of the soluble form, ME20-S, could protect tumor cells from antibody mediated immunity. Belongs to the PMEL/NMB family. 5 isoforms of the human protein are produced by alternative splicing.

Protein type: Membrane protein, integral; Vesicle

Chromosomal Location of Human Ortholog: 12q13-q14

Cellular Component: Golgi apparatus; endoplasmic reticulum membrane; plasma membrane; melanosome; integral to membrane; extracellular region

Product Notes

The ME20M pmel (Catalog #AAA2126062) is an Antibody produced from Rabbit and is intended for research purposes only. The product is available for immediate purchase. The HRP-Linked Polyclonal Antibody to Melanoma Associated ME20 (ME20M) reacts with Human and may cross-react with other species as described in the data sheet. AAA Biotech's Melanoma Associated ME20 (ME20M) can be used in a range of immunoassay formats including, but not limited to, Western Blot (WB), Immunohistochemistry (IHC), Immunocytochemistry (ICC), Immunoprecipitation (IP). WB: 0.5-2ug/ml IHC: 5-20ug/ml ICC: 5-20ug/ml. Researchers should empirically determine the suitability of the ME20M pmel for an application not listed in the data sheet. Researchers commonly develop new applications and it is an integral, important part of the investigative research process. It is sometimes possible for the material contained within the vial of "Melanoma Associated ME20 (ME20M), Polyclonal Antibody" to become dispersed throughout the inside of the vial, particularly around the seal of said vial, during shipment and storage. We always suggest centrifuging these vials to consolidate all of the liquid away from the lid and to the bottom of the vial prior to opening. Please be advised that certain products may require dry ice for shipping and that, if this is the case, an additional dry ice fee may also be required.
