Hepatitis B virus is a double-stranded DNA virus and one of the smallest enveloped animal viruses. The virus particle consists of an outer lipid envelope and an icosahedral nucleocapsid core composed of protein. The nucleocapsid encloses the viral DNA and a DNA polymerase that has reverse transcriptase activity similar to retroviruses. Proteins in the outer envelope (surface antigen, HBsAg) are involved in viral binding and entry into susceptible cells. HBsAg detection by immunoassay is used in blood screening, to establish a test of hepatitis B infection in the clinical setting (in combination with other disease markers) and to monitor antiviral treatment.
