This gene encodes a member of the voltage-dependent calcium channel protein subunit family. The cDNA for this gene was cloned from hair cells of the cochlea in the chicken inner ear. Study of the similar transmembrane protein in deficient mice reported impaired cardiac function and deafness, suggesting that the encoded protein is required for normal hearing and pacemaker activity in the heart.
